Valence electron configuration of Nitrogen; 1s22s22p3 - From Sparknotes Nitrogen has 5 valence electrons so why is it not just 2s22p3?

Because you also have the electrons from the 1s orbital shell.

Those are just valence elctrons are the ones that are in the outer shell of the atom.

I'm still confused sorry - isn't the Valence Shell Electron Configuration just meant to show the outer electrons? (i.e valence electrons?) And there are 5 of those?
