I don't think I factored the sum of cubes correctly, because when I checked it, it didn't equal the original expression. What did I do wrong?

Notice that if the side of the second cube is \(2t\) then the volume would be \((side)^3 = (2t)^3 = 8t^3\).
That affects your first answer.
In the second, make sure to do \((2t)^2 = 4t^2\) and not \(2t^2\) as you have now.

OK. Is it correct now?

@pitamar
OpenStudy (anonymous):
Well you got \(4t\) out of \((2t)^2\) so not yet.
OpenStudy (quickstudent):
Oh, yeah, that was a typo
OpenStudy (anonymous):
besides that it all seems good to me =)
but you still have to correct the last answer.

What is wrong there?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
You changed the first answer, so your calculation should be done with the new formula.
OpenStudy (quickstudent):
Should it be like this:
(2 * 7)^3 + 12^3 = 14^3 + 12^3 = 2,744 + 12^3 = 2,744 + 1,728 = 4,472 cu. in.
