OpenStudy (anonymous):

The pictured structure codes for how many amino acids? A-6 B-12 C-4 D-2 Can someone give me the code?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Picture?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Check the above image and tell me if you can figure it out yourself.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

A, T, G, C are nucleic acids which form codons (combination of three) and code for a unique amino acid.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I stand corrected.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Example, GTT, GTA, GTG all three codon code for the same amino acid called Valine.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

In your question, try to figure out how many such valid codons are possible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

6?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Abhisar

OpenStudy (abhisar):

Write the codons.

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@alyssa.ward2016

OpenStudy (anonymous):

GAC, GAT, GAA, GTC,GTT, GTG?

OpenStudy (abhisar):

No

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dang

OpenStudy (anonymous):

this is so confusing

OpenStudy (abhisar):

GAC is correct, How others? http://prntscr.com/62unur

OpenStudy (abhisar):

@shrutipande9 may explain it better.

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

see...what abhisar is trying to explain is absolutely correct...so if u have a chain of 6 nucleotides. the first 3 would make 1 codon and the next three would make the second. you cannot have overlapping codons...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hmm

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

and as only 1 strand is read as a template, we cannot count no of codons from both the strands

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so would GAC be one and CTG be one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

or is that where you cant overlap?

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

no no...consider only 1 strand....

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I dont know! this doesnt make sense to me,.. im horrible with biology

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

no u r not....consider one strand....lets say the lower one...now count the first 3 nucleotides. that makes 1 codon, then consider the next three nucleotides (no overlapping)

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

|dw:1423453122352:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for the first strand it would be ATC, ACT,TAC,CAT

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

just take the 3 letters in the same order....dont mix the leters.. see the picture i have drawn.first codon is ATC. only ATC and no combination TAC CAT ETC ETC.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

AGC, TAA, CTC?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol idk i give up

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

u dont have an option of 3...so thats not the ans..:P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol 6

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i know its not 4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its 2!!!

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

and tell me the codons:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

atg and act

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

well done..:)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you!!

OpenStudy (shrutipande9):

ur welcome..:)
