Help please Water is a compound because it (1 point) • can be broken down into simpler substances. • always has two hydrogen atoms for each oxygen atom. • is made of water atoms joined together. • both a and b Which of the following is a heterogeneous mixture? (1 point) • water in a swimming pool • sugar water • a jar of mixed nuts • stainless steel

OpenStudy (spudmushie123):

1) The definition of a compound is a pure substance composed of two or more elements whose composition is constant. So, This would imply to find the answers that say that water is made up of two or more elements. This would rule out choice 3, which says nothing about water being made up of two or more elements. So, the answer to this part is choice 4, because both 1 and 2 say that water is a PURE substance containing two or more elements. 2) The prefix hetero- means different. SO, a heterogeneous mixture would be one that is made up of different substances. The only choice where this holds true is in choice 3, so that's the answer. My teacher always taught us the "pick" test for heterogeneous mixtures. If you can pick all the individual things out, it is definitely a heterogeneous mixture. For example, you can pick out the nuts in trail mix, but you can't pick out the hydrogen atoms in a swimming pool.
