what would happen to a blood cell if it were placed in hyptonic solution

you just posted this question lol

OpenStudy (somy):

first of all, can you say what kind of solution is hypotonic?

OpenStudy (shiraz14):

A hypotonic solution is one in which the water potential is higher (i.e. it is more dilute) than the cell sap of the blood cell. In such a case, water would diffuse into the cell. Since the blood cell does not have a cell wall (as are typical of almost all animal cells), it will expand & burst (lyse).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A hypotonic solution has a higher osmotic potential (that is, it contains more water) relative to the cytoplasm inside red blood cells (which therefore has the lower osmotic potential). Water therefore moves into the red blood cells causing their volume to increase. This eventually causes the red blood cell to blow up just like a balloon does when you over inflate it.
