it's either a mistake on my part of not understanding how the units transform or a simple mistake on the authors part

Do you agree that 4/5*F1 + 0 - 5*9.81 * cos(45 degrees) = 0 ?

Okay? So I should just treat kg as not multiplying the number by 10^3? in this case, 5 kg as just 5 not 5000, right?

right, because force in SI uses newtons, and 1 newton = 1kg * m/s^2

OpenStudy (perl):

1 N = 1 kg * m/s^2
