OpenStudy (korosh23):

What is the charge on the nucleus of each of the following? a) Mg b) Ne c)K^1+ d) S^2-

OpenStudy (korosh23):

For c and d. It is K+ and d is S 2-, but I do not understand what the question is exactly asking me to find. Solve and explain. Thank you.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

The charge of the nucleus should just be the amount of protons. Electrons are not located in the nucleus, so it shouldn't affect the charge. Protons are +1 each so the nucleus net charge should always be positive( in this case)

OpenStudy (korosh23):

Does this mean to find the atomic mass or atomic number?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Atomic number (protons)

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

For example, MG has a nucleus charge of +12. The element itself since it's not an ion is a neutral charge of 0.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

I don't think your ions here have an effect on the charge of the nucleus.

OpenStudy (korosh23):

Ok thank you
