Why don't compounds have the same properties as the elements that made it? I have examples, but I never figured out the exact answer of why.

Because the compound formed, has a new chemical arrangement and sometimes a new bond. Hence, that differs in the behaviour of the substance physically ( melting and boiling points) and chemically (how do they react ). Electrical conductivity also matters in their differences. For intance Na+Cl are metallic and covalent bonded initially and they have given melting and boilng points. Onle Na conducts electricity. As they bind, they become ionically bonded and only conduct electricity when molten.
