Write the equation of the line in standard form. (Hint: Find the equation of the line using Slope-Intercept form and then manipulate the equation to get the correct form.)

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Ok, the first thing to do is to find the y-intercept. Can you tell where that is?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

@Teddyiswatshecallsme ?

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Is it 0,1?

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

@JoannaBlackwelder

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

The y axis the one that goes up and down, so it looks like it crosses at -2 to me.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

From that point, find another point on the graph that is easy to see, like 1,1

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Count that from 0,-2 you go up 3 and right 1 to get to 1,1

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

And with the formula y = mx + b where m is the slope and b is the y intercept,

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

We found our y intercept to be -2 so, that gives us y = mx - 2

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Are you following me so far?

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Yes.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Ok, cool. Can you tell me what the slope is from what we have done so far?

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

I cannot. I am a bit confused on how to do the slope.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Ok, no worries. The slope is rise/run or (change in y)/(change in x)

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

And we found that we go up 3 (change in y) and right 1 (change in x)

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

So, the slope is 3/1 or 3 :)

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Thank you!!! :D

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Now how do we put that in standard form?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Well, what we have now is y = 3x - 2, and standard form is ax + by = c

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

So, we need to put the x term on the other side. Any ideas how to do that?

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Nope.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Ok, subtract 3x from both sides of the equation.

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Mhmm

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

To get -3x + y = -2

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Okay.

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Is that the answer?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Yep :)

OpenStudy (teddyiswatshecallsme):

Yay :D
