is the esterification reaction of benzoic acid and butan-2-ol...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

butylbenzoate and water? some person said it was 1-methylpropyl benzoate..... dont know which is right...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and if it is the other one why?

OpenStudy (thadyoung):

Your person friend is correct with the methylpropyl benzoate and water is the leaving group here. This is done in an acid medium while keeping reflux. This allows the reaction to proceed. So need to keep that in mind. Also, using some strong acid, your first step would be protonation of by the acid onto benzoic acid (carboxylic acids are, in general, more acidic than alcohols). Remember that you have resonance on the carboxlylic group, which allows proton abstraction from the acid. |dw:1425952086321:dw|
