Been stuck on this question for a while now...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i can see why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Grace is standing 14 feet from a lighthouse and Kelly is standing 12 feet from Grace. The angle that Grace looks up to see the top of the lighthouse is 45°. The angle that Kelly looks up to see the top of the lighthouse is y°.|dw:1425958219023:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need to find the height, and the angle in which Kelly is looking at the lighthouse.

OpenStudy (tylerd):

first solve for height.

OpenStudy (tylerd):

tan(45)=height/14 14tan(45)=height

OpenStudy (tylerd):

then you have 14+12=26 tan(theta)=height/26 or tan(theta)=14tan(45)/26

OpenStudy (tylerd):

arctan(14tan(45)/26)= angle of y

OpenStudy (tylerd):

that is assuming kelly is standing 12ft from gracy, rather then 12ft infront of gracy.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay, so the height would be 45 since the tan of 45 is 1? Or would it be 14, reading it as 14 x the tan of 45?

OpenStudy (tylerd):

it would be 14

OpenStudy (tylerd):

so you can subsitute 14 for 14tan(45) in the other parts

OpenStudy (tylerd):

to make it simpler

Alright, thanks so much man :) I'll give you your medal here in a second.
