How many pounds does a 1.0000 quart of mercury weight? Its density is 13.55 g/ml at 25Celsius. I am really lost with this question I know I have to use the density formula as a conversion factor but am not that great at conversion factors :/

OpenStudy (somy):

density = mass/ volume

OpenStudy (somy):

convert quart unit to mL and use the formula to find mass mass = density x volume

OpenStudy (somy):

you answer for mass will be in grams so convert to pounds thats your final answer

OpenStudy (somy):

1 quart = 946.352 ml 1000 quart = ? so x= 946.352 x 1000 = volume in mL

OpenStudy (somy):

1 gram = 0.00220 pounds mass you get using the formula = ? x= mass you get using the formula x 0.00220 pounds =

OpenStudy (somy):

weight of mercury in ponds

OpenStudy (somy):

pounds*

OpenStudy (somy):

hope its clear :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I went from qt->L->mL->g->lb but

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.0000qt X 1L/1.057qt X 1000mL/1L X 13.55g/1mL X 1lb/453.59g

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The end result I got was 28.261866 in scientific notation 2.8262 X 10 lb after everything cancels out. I m nt sure its correct

OpenStudy (somy):

u got the right ans

OpenStudy (somy):

they just converted it to standard form

OpenStudy (somy):

wait i'll get on os from laptop

OpenStudy (somy):

yep so what i was saying you got your result as 28.261866 = round off 28.262 and now when u convert it to its standard form and that is having only one number before decimal but you have two numbers which are 2 and 8 so you need to move backwards (i mean the decimal point) thus you will get 2.8262 x 10 as your final answer

OpenStudy (somy):

oh wait i got u wrong sec i'll try the working (just woke up lol so my brain is barely working)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol no worries thank you :)

OpenStudy (somy):

282701 pound

OpenStudy (somy):

to clarify one thing 1.0000 = this is 10000 or that dot is decimal?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

decimal

OpenStudy (somy):

because usually if after decimal there are zeros, we put only 2 of them but here there are 4 so its most probably number r u sure?

OpenStudy (somy):

alright then you did it right pretty much

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes the notebook has 4 zeros after the decimal I think because they want an answer with 5sig figs

OpenStudy (somy):

ah yeah makes sense

OpenStudy (somy):

sorry brain still trying to wake up lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I have a question tho I rounded the very last # 1 to 2 bc of hte 8 that followed the 2. Should I have done that or just left it as a 1?

OpenStudy (somy):

2 is fine

OpenStudy (somy):

rounding of when it comes to numbers close to decimal - is not fine but just rounding the ending as far as i know its fine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok thank you so much :)

OpenStudy (somy):

oh waw you just turned me green :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol no way :D Go you!!

OpenStudy (somy):

lol thnks!

OpenStudy (somy):

your medal increased my smartscore just one eh
