Find the hidden X element

OpenStudy (ahsome):

Given that there is an unknown element: \(X\) The equation states: \[2XI_3+3CL_2\longrightarrow2XCL_3+3I_2\] If \(XI_3\) Has a mass of 0.5g, and that gives 0.236g of \(XCL_3\), find the atomic weight of \(X\), and identify the element

@Somy

OpenStudy (somy):

mole = mass/ molecular mass mass = mole x molecular mass mole ratio is same so i believe we can ignore mole thus we'll focus on mass and molecular mass 0.5g of XI3 - from here we know molecular mass of I only and its 127x3 = 381+ X so 0.5g = 381+X 0.236g of XCl3 = 35.5x3 = 106.5 + X so 0.5 = 381+X 0.236 = 106.5 + X 0.5 x (106.5 + X) = 0.236 x (381 + X) you can do the math and find the X
