thermochem question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so whats the difference between a system and its surroundings? so i know system is something like the reaction you are deling with while surroundings is everything else.... but thats vague could you guys give me an example?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and explaination

OpenStudy (anonymous):

System can be the reaction and where it is taking place in, with its own conditions. For instance, the electrolysis ofwater is taken in a recipient at a given temperature and the catalyst used is H2SO4. The surrounds will be the temperature, pressure which are out of the enclosed reaction that might affect its rate,

OpenStudy (matt101):

That's actually exactly the definition, and it's meant to vague on purpose because it applies to so many things. Say you're burning a piece of paper. The paper, and the oxygen being consumed as it burns, are your system. The burning produces heat, which, though it starts in the system, will move into the surroundings (e.g. the air around the burning paper, other nearby papers, etc). You might also want to know the difference between the following: An OPEN system is one in which both matter and energy from your system can be exchanged with the surroundings. A CLOSED system is one in which energy from the system, but not matter, can be exchanged with the surroundings. An ISOLATED system is one in which neither matter nor energy can be exchanged with the surroundings.
