Which of the following chemical equations is NOT correctly balanced? N2 + H2 -> 2 NH3 HCl + NaHCO3 -> CO2 + H2O + NaCl C2H5OH + 3O2 -> 2CO2 + 3H2O<---- 4NH3 + 5O2 -> 4NO + 6H2O

OpenStudy (justin_lee):

Figure this out by counting the number of each element on one side and comparing to the number of the same elements on the other side. Take for example, the last equation: 4NH3 + 5O2 -> 4NO + 6H2O On the left hand side, there are 4 Nitrogens, 12 Hydrogens (4x3=12), and 10 Oxygens (5x2=10). On the right hand side, there are 4 Nitrogens, 12 Hydrogens (6x2=12), and 10 Oxygens (4+6=10). Since the numbers of each element are equal on both sides, you know that this equation is balanced. Try the same technique on the other three.

1. has 2 nitrogen then 2 hydrogen then 2 nitrogen and 6 hydrogen? 2. 2 hydrogen 2 chlorine 1 sodium 1 carbon 3 oxygen then 1 carbon 3 oxygen 2 hydrogen 1 sodium and 1 chlorine. 3. 2 carbon 6 hydrogen 7 oxygen then 2 carbon 6 hydrogen 7 oxygen so the first is the answer?

OpenStudy (justin_lee):

Yes. Good job!
