OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

To dissolve an ionic solid in water, you must first disrupt the ionic bonds that are holding the ionic lattice together. This is an endothermic process, yet many ionic solids have an exothermic heat of solution. (Heat is released when the ionic solid is dissolved.) This is because: A. all heats of solution are negative. B. all heats of solution are positive. C. ionic bonds are very weak. D. more energy is released when water molecules surround the ions. E. more energy is absorbed when water molecules surround the ions.

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

I think it's either A or B

OpenStudy (jfraser):

why?

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

because i don't think its C since the ionic bonds are strong and it's not E

OpenStudy (jfraser):

the problem tells you a couple things about ionic solids

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

Oh so it is C?

OpenStudy (jfraser):

you're jumping with no reason

OpenStudy (jfraser):

the problem tells you that you have to put \(in\) a little energy to break the ionic lattice of a solid

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

Oh it's B. Thanks :)

OpenStudy (jfraser):

but the problem \(ALSO\) tells you that you get a whole lot of energy \(out\) of the system when the ionic solid dissolves

OpenStudy (jfraser):

it's not B

OpenStudy (jfraser):

you're not thinking about this properly

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

Yes it is. I just got it right.

OpenStudy (jfraser):

then your test is wrong because B is not true

OpenStudy (vera_ewing):

I mean D not B sorry. that was a typo lol But yeah it's D :)

OpenStudy (jfraser):

it is, but if you can't explain WHY, then you're not really learning it
