OpenStudy (dtan5457):

Which substance has molecular forces of attraction mainly due to van der Waals forces? Sodium Chloride Helium Diamond Water

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

i pretty much forgot what those forces are.

Van Der Waals forces are responsible to keep atoms of an element or compound together. They appear in all cases, but not always they are dominant. Let us take a look at each one of those. - NaCl is predominantly made by ionic bonds, therefore VDW forces lack. - Diamond is predominantly made by strong covalent bonds. - Water is predominantly made by hydrogen bonds. - Helium is an element , plus it is a noble gas and there are no forces of attraction, meaning the predominant forces are the VDW's.

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

How do I know which is stronger or weaker?

OpenStudy (dtan5457):

seems like ionic bonds are the weakest, what trends make it stronger?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

ionic > ion-dipole > dipole-dipole > dipole-induced dipole >london dispersion
