is this right, Protons = identity of element Protons + Neutrons = Atomic mass # of Protons - # of electrons = charge?

Yep! that's all you have to follow. Mass number is the number of proton and neutron combined together. (My teacher doesn't agree that it is okay to say atomic mass-I forgot the reason). "# of Protons - # of electrons = charge" well I guess I would agree but if an atom loses or gain an electron, it will be an ion. So in this case, the charge will be zero since the number of protons will cancel out with the number of electrons.
