OpenStudy (anonymous):

what happens to the atom is electrons are removed or added?

OpenStudy (shamim):

U know atom has equal number of electrons nd protons

OpenStudy (shamim):

So atom is electrically neutral

OpenStudy (shamim):

For example hellium atom has 2 electrons nd 2 protons

OpenStudy (shamim):

So hellium atom is electrically neutral

OpenStudy (shamim):

If hellium atom loss 1 electron , then hellium ion will hv 2 protons nd 1 electron

OpenStudy (shamim):

So number of proton is greater than the number of electron by 1

OpenStudy (shamim):

Now the hellium ion is positively charged

OpenStudy (shamim):

If the hellium atom get 1 electron then it will b negatively charged

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

When an electrically neutral atom loses one of its peripheral electrons, it becomes a positive ion, since its number of protons into its nucleus is greater than number of its electrons. Whereas if an electrically neutral atom gains one electron, such electron gained will occupy the outermost shell of that atom, well such atom will become a negative ion, since the number of its proton into its nucleus, is less than number of its electrons.
