MEDAL. AND FAN. Given the following equation: Cl2 + 2NaBr 2NaCl + Br2 i. Assign oxidation numbers to each element. ii. Which element is oxidized? iii. Which element is reduced? iv. What is the oxidizing agent? v. What is the reducing agent?
Do you have the rules of assigning oxidation numbers?
Cool, so what is the oxidation number for Cl2?
I've answered a similar question to this before for another equation if you want to have a look at it: http://openstudy.com/study#/updates/53bbd897e4b0f3a650f81339 Despite dealing with a different equation, if you're able to know and follow the couple of simple rules in assigning oxidation numbers to species then you can tackle your problem. Once you've done this, you use the definitions of oxidation, reduction and both oxidising and reducing agents to assign species in the equation to these titles. Good luck!
