Redox Reactions!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a) The environment on Earth is an oxidizing environment. Write 2-3 sentences to describe, using oxidation numbers, how the oxidation number of carbon changes in the conversion of methane through carbon dioxide using the image below. b) Which substance(s) in the diagram would be able to participate as both a substance that oxidizes and a substance that reduces another substance? c) Which substance(s) in the diagram would most likely participate in reactions as a substance that is reduced? d) Which substance(s) in the diagram would most likely participate in reactions as a substance that is oxidized?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

do u know basics of redox reaction ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well that one element loses electrons while the other gains them

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaaa same process only you explain in 2 to 3 sentences .... think how can methane convert to CO2 .... by redox reaction

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CH4 + 2 O2 -> CO2 + 2 H2O ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hello?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ganeshie8 @Australopithecus

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You have to use the given chain of reactions to oxidize methane

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and explain the oxidizing of Carbon using them

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I do that? specifically for part A please. I think I figured out the others. P.S. I like your profile picture @Harindu

OpenStudy (anonymous):

haha ok. CH4-->CH3OH 2CH4+O2 --> 2CH3OH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CH3OH-->CH2O +H2 2CH2O +O2-->2HCOOH HCOOH --> CO2 + H2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I am not entirely sure about this equations :)

Thank you so much! your help is greatly appreciated.
