Which of the following is correct for the equation below? 2P(s) + 3Cl¿(g) d 2PClÀ(g) + 574 kJ

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-574 +287 -287 +574

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Correct for what? The enthalpy of reaction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Oh, ok. Since the heat is in the products that makes this reaction exothermic. Do you know if the enthalpy of exothermic reactions is positive or negative?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

negative?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Yep. :-) And how much heat is released for one reaction?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure with that part.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Well, 574 kJ is in the products of the balanced reaction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so then -287

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Why would you think -287?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I thought since that was the total and it had to be negative it was the 287?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

It does have to be negative, but I get -574
