Thorium-234 decays by giving off one particle, and the decay can be represented by the following nuclear equation: 234/90Th -->234/91Pa + ? a. what is the complete equation? b. what type of radiation is given off in this reaction? c. where does it come from? This my last bonus question on my last assignment for physics for the school year, any help is appreciated. :)

OpenStudy (z4k4r1y4):

the reason the proton number goes from 90 to 91 is because a neutron decays into a proton. this gives off a beta particle ie this is beta decay

OpenStudy (z4k4r1y4):

have you done nutrinos?

OpenStudy (z4k4r1y4):

No. Gamma radiation is just EM waves.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do I figure out what kind of radiation is given off?

OpenStudy (z4k4r1y4):

a) is correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is b alpha?

OpenStudy (z4k4r1y4):

no. I think b) is: beta radiation, and c) is: from the emission of an electron.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you so much!

OpenStudy (z4k4r1y4):

you're welcome.
