Tickets to the movies cost $12 for adults and $8 for children. A group of 14 people went to the movies, and the tickets cost $136. The system of equations models this situation, where x is the number of adults and y is the number of children. x+y=14 12x+8y=136 How many adults and how many children were in the group? A. 9 adults and 5 children B. 6 adults and 8 children C. 4 adults and 10 children D. 8 adults and 6 children

Vocaloid (vocaloid):

solve the system of equations for x and y x = number of adults y = number of children

I will write the steps to solve this by the method of elimination: first multiply the first equation by 12 this will give you a new equation (call it the THIRD equation) that has "12x" in it Now you can see that the second equation ALSO has 12x in it so SUBTRACT the second equation from the Third equation to give you the Fourth equation Because there was 12x in BOTH equations it will be eliminated and there will be only Y in the fourth equqution You should have an equation which has 4y= ??? So you can work out what y is from the fourth equation. NOW oyu have a number for y so go back to the first equation and put that number in place of y so oyu have x + 'a number' = 14 and you can get x from that equation
