Which of the following statements would best describe how to increase the work done by a heat engine? A. Lower the temperature of the hot reservoir. B. Raise the temperature of the exhaust. C. Lower the temperature of the exhaust. D. Raise the temperature of the cold reservoir. **Not sure!! thank you:)

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

the efficiency of a Thermal machine is given by the subsequent formula: \[\eta = 1 - \frac{{{T_2}}}{{{T_1}}}\] where T_1 is the temperature of the hot reservoir and T_2 is the temperature of the cold reservoir

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay! :) so to increase the work done, would we have to lower the temperature of the exhaust? :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i am not sure :/

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

yes! that's right! we have to lower the value of T_2. Please keep in mind that both T_1 and T_2 are absolute temperatures

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yay!! :) so choice C it is! thank you!!

OpenStudy (michele_laino):

yes! Option C thank you!! :)
