identify the oblique asymptote of f(x) = quantity x squared minus 4 x plus 8 over quantity x plus 2. y = 0 y = x - 2 y = x - 6 No oblique asymptote

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[f(x) = \frac{ x^2 - 4x + 8 }{ x + 2 }\]

@paki @skullpatrol @nincompoop

OpenStudy (nincompoop):

what is an asymptote?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

idk i missed like a wee of school because i was sick and this is make up work and next week are exams

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i basically factor?

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

You have an improper fraction because the degree of the numerator is 2 and the degree of the denominator is 1. When you divide a degree 2 by a degree 1 you end up with a degree 1 polynomial (at most). Doing synthetic division of this function you get |dw:1433095265662:dw| See - http://www.purplemath.com/modules/synthdiv.htm (for synthetic division process) It's always good to plot the function to visualize the asymptote: http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=plot+%28x%5E2-4x%2B8%29%2F%28x%2B2%29+with+asymptote Does all this make sense?

hey

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanx @ybarrap

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

Hopefully you understood and the next one will be a easy!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah i did thank you !
