Which of the following is not a characteristic of an ionic compound? ( Again , no help in science :l ) It is a solid. It has a high melting point. It is formed when atoms share electrons. It is made of a metal and a nonmetal.
I would suppose that "It is formed when atoms share electrons" is false as in ionic bonds they do not share electrons but donate and accept electrons. They should be ions. Ions in ionic compounds are held together by the electrostatic force between oppositely charged bodies. In an ionic bond, one 'bonder' must have a positive charge and the other a negative one. By sticking to each other, they resolve, or partially resolve, their separate charge imbalances. Positive to positive and negative to negative ionic bonds do not occur. in an ionic bond, one 'bonder' must have a positive charge and the other a negative one.
