What happens when the thermal energy of a substance increases? The motion of the particles in the substance increases, and the temperature of the substance decreases. The motion of the particles in the substance decreases, and the temperature of the substance increases. Both the motion of the particles in the substance and the temperature of the substance decrease. Both the motion of the particles in the substance and the temperature of the substance increase
:D?

So for thermal energy to occur particals will vibrate more as their attraction increases. The creation of more particle movement will cause internal heat to rise but also subsequently give off more heat externally to reach equilibrium.
