Hydrogen can be obtained economically as a bi-product in the electrolysis of _____________. Calcium chloride water Sodium hydroxide brine

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Can you write out the chemical formulas for each?

CaCl2 H2O NaOH

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CaCl2 will for sure not produce Hydrogen. I think 2H2O will produce 2H2 + O2.

My reasoning is, The H2 and O2 is stable. However, in NaOH The Na has a positive charge and the OH has a negative charge (hence , it remains neutral). If 2OH for O2 + H2 The Na won't have anything to maintain it's neutrality.
