only for the pH. there is no equation for scientific notation. It's just a way to express the decimals in small numbers (or express really large numbers). I'll show you two examples, when you move the decimal point to the left 1000.0 = \(1.000*10^3\) you get a positive exponent. when you move the decimal point to the left 0.0010 = \(0001.0*10^{-3}\) you get a negative exponent. You would really just write \(1.0*10^{-3}\)
