A chemist is investigating the following type of reaction using primary and secondary alcohols. After mixing the reactants the mixture is refluxed. ROH + SOCl2 ---> What type of compound is most likely the product. Choices attached.

OpenStudy (rushwr):

hey there I can't see the attachment

OpenStudy (photon336):

This is the second time this has happened!! Haha

OpenStudy (rushwr):

C

OpenStudy (rushwr):

it is C . it also forms HCl and SO2 in addition to that.

OpenStudy (photon336):

=D @Rushwr

OpenStudy (rushwr):

yeah thts the mechanism. :) @Photon336

OpenStudy (photon336):

One of the chlorine atoms, once displaced from the sulphur atom, comes in as a nucleophile and attacks the carbon causing SO2 to be released, then a chlorine picks off a proton

OpenStudy (rushwr):

yeah I agree! @Photon336

OpenStudy (photon336):

I never saw this mechanism being used with alcohols, usually saw it with carboxylic acids, when you convert those into an acyl chloride

OpenStudy (rushwr):

hahaha now you know nah! @Photon336
