For the following reaction, identify the substances being oxidized and reduced (including their oxidation numbers), the oxidizing agent, and reducing agent. CH4 + 2O2 yields CO2 + 2H2O

OpenStudy (rushwr):

hey wt do u think the answer is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Idk I need someone to help me through it

OpenStudy (rushwr):

okai 1st wt u should do is calculate the oxidation numbers of the reactants

OpenStudy (rushwr):

calculate and tell me the oxidation numbers of C H and O

OpenStudy (photon336):

Oxidizing agent is something that causes another Element to be oxidized but it's reduced. If it causes the other element to be oxidized it must be reduced in the profess, i.e it gains electrons. Reducing agent is something that causes the other element to be reduced, but is itself oxidized. So it donates electrons to the other element to reduce it, so it becomes oxidized.
