What is the IUPAC name of this compound? OH CH3 – –CH3 | CH3
Hard to tell. Draw it.
But it looks like isopropanol
propanol :P
but y did u put that oh up there
More specific. Can't just be propanol.
carbon makes only 3 bonds but the carbon in the middle ch3 is makin more than 3
My guess is they meant t-butanol and the spaces got lost when they submitted it. That would mean there's actually a carbon in the middle there bonded to these 3 \(CH_3\) groups and the \(OH\) group. Specifically though I'm not sure t-butanol is the IUPAC name, so systematically we can find the largest carbon chain containing the alcohol group, which in this case will be a propane. Then numbering it we have a methyl group and alcohol at the 2-positiion so we really have 2-methylpropan-2-ol. Or alternatively you can put the 2 for the alcohol out front and call it 2-methyl-2-propanol.
