OpenStudy (minthia):

which of the following correctly identifies the composition of an oxygen atom? 8p,8e,8n 6p,6e,6n 8p,6e,7n 6p,6e,12n

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Atomic number=number of proton Atomic weight=number of neutrons + number of protons Net charge=number of protons + number of electrons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If oxygen is O and there is no charge, then net charge=0

OpenStudy (minthia):

what about electrons?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Read what I wrote above. You need to know the # of protons to find the number of electrons.

OpenStudy (minthia):

oh 6 protons right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Why would you think its 6 protons?

OpenStudy (minthia):

why wouldn't I 6+ 6 12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

where did you get 12 from?

OpenStudy (minthia):

its my last choice and its the only thing that seems right 6+6 =12

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, I said atomic weight=number of protons + number of neutrons. Not number of neutrons=number of protons + number of electrons

OpenStudy (minthia):

I really have no idea and im sure the answer is right in front of me I REALLY appreciate your time and trying to help its just not working best response and medal its not u its me this is my second year of this class and it looks like I will be back at it next year LOL

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No, you are wrong. Trust me

OpenStudy (minthia):

I know I am

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you look at the periodic table, oxygen's atomic number is 8 I said atomic number=number of proton So 8=8 which is 8 protons If you look at the periodic table again its atomic weight is 16 and since atomic weight=# of protons + # of neutrons 16=8 protons+ # of neutrons 16-8=8 neutrons Since oxygen has a charge of O it is 0 In order to get a charge of zero, the # of electrons must equal the # of protons Since there are 8 protons, there must be 8 electrons also. Hope it helps!

OpenStudy (minthia):

8 protons 8 electrons 8 nutrons

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (minthia):

thank you

No problem! You understood it right?
