word problem help
OpenStudy (ccswims):
are they asking you to create your own equation?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yeah for A.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i got f(n)=4.5n
OpenStudy (ccswims):
yea, your right, lol. ^.^

can you help me with this one?
OpenStudy (ineedhelpfast12):
4.5n
OpenStudy (anonymous):
b) Suppose the total cost for n tickets is $36. What is the total cost if one more ticket is
purchased?
OpenStudy (ccswims):
ok, now just plug in 36 for f(x)
OpenStudy (ineedhelpfast12):
36+4.50

OpenStudy (ccswims):
36 = 4.5n
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok thanks
OpenStudy (anonymous):
thanks for being helpful. mind if you help me with other ones? @ccswims
OpenStudy (ccswims):
sure!

is 20-2*3^2
OpenStudy (anonymous):
does it equal 2?
OpenStudy (ccswims):
yes :)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
can you show me step by step how to do it
OpenStudy (ccswims):
ok, use PEMDAS, or order of operations.
Parenthesis
Exponents
Multiply
Divide
Add
Subtract
that is the order you go through things if you have a problem you just showed me

OpenStudy (ccswims):
since we have no parenthesis, but we do have exponents, we would simplify the exponent first
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok
OpenStudy (ccswims):
that would leave us with 20 - 2*9 now
OpenStudy (ccswims):
then we have multiplication, so we do 2*9 next
OpenStudy (ccswims):
and then subtract 20 - 18 last

ok thx
OpenStudy (anonymous):
5*2^2 / 2+8 = 18 right?
OpenStudy (ccswims):
yes
OpenStudy (anonymous):
if s=4 and t=8 what is (st)^2 / (st^2)
OpenStudy (anonymous):
@ccswims

OpenStudy (ccswims):
ok, so according to PEMDAS parenthesis always comes first
OpenStudy (ccswims):
so with that information, what can you do by yourself?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
how is the equation set up?
OpenStudy (ccswims):
(4*2)^2 / (4*2^2)
OpenStudy (ccswims):
WAIT

OpenStudy (ccswims):
(4*8)^2 / (4*8^2)
OpenStudy (ccswims):
for some reason i put 2 instead of 8 in the first expression i gave you
OpenStudy (anonymous):
oh
OpenStudy (ccswims):
so work on (4*8)^2 / (4*8^2) and then tell me your answer when you get it
OpenStudy (anonymous):
1?

@ccswims
OpenStudy (ccswims):
not quite.
when you multiply 4*8 you get 32
32^2 / (4*8^2)
now, the (4*8^2) part can get tricky because i used to think you need to multiply 4*8 first then use the exponent. but what that parenthesis tells us is that its actually 4 * 8^2 and the 8 is the only one with the exponent.
so its actually 32^2/256
OpenStudy (ccswims):
then its 1024/256 = 4
OpenStudy (ccswims):
so the answer is 4
OpenStudy (anonymous):
can you help me with a few more plz

OpenStudy (ccswims):
do you get the problem tho?
OpenStudy (ccswims):
like, do you understand how i got 4?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
yeah i saw my mistake
OpenStudy (ccswims):
ok, as long as you understand how to do it :)

ok so if s=4 and t=8 what is 2s^2-t^3 / 16
OpenStudy (anonymous):
just tell me the set up and ill try to get it
OpenStudy (ccswims):
ok, you you need to plus in 4 for s and 8 for t
2*4^2 - 8^3 / 16
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok
OpenStudy (anonymous):
i messed up i think @ccswims

i got 0
OpenStudy (ccswims):
the answer is actually 1, can you show me your work so i can see where you went wrong?
OpenStudy (anonymous):
ok
OpenStudy (ccswims):
WAIT, never mind you got it right
OpenStudy (ccswims):
i messed up and divided 32 by 32, and you need to subtract 32 and 32

which im guessing you did because the answer is 0 and you got 0.
OpenStudy (anonymous):
2*4^2-8^3 / 16
2*16-512 / 16
32-512 / 16
32-32
OpenStudy (ccswims):
yes, you got it right
OpenStudy (ccswims):
it was my mistake. your getting the hang of equations like this really well
OpenStudy (anonymous):
so is it 1 or 0?
