An element has 8 protons and 8 neutrons in its nucleus and 8 electrons revolving around the nucleus. What is the atomic number and atomic mass of this element? Answers are in order, atomic number then atomic mass Question 3 options: A) 16 and 8 B) 8 and 8 C) 8 and 16 D) 16 and 4

@BioHazard9064

OpenStudy (biohazard9064):

B

OpenStudy (aaronq):

B is incorrect. furthermore, refrain from providing direct answers with no explanation whatsoever.

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

thanks(:

OpenStudy (biohazard9064):

ok will do

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

well if you think your right @arronq then explain to me please how you thinks its not B

OpenStudy (aaronq):

The atomic number of an element is equal to the number of protons (this part is correct above) but the atomic mass number is the SUM of the protons and neutrons together. They have (almost) equal weights, normalized to 1. Electrons are not included in the sum because their weight contribution is insignificant.

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

okay so what does that mean?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

i means that you add the protons and the neutrons and you get the atomic mass number

OpenStudy (ilovebmth1234):

so it would be C?

OpenStudy (aaronq):

yes
