Derive the equation of the parabola with a focus at (6, 2) and a directrix of y = 1.

Let's pick a point on the parabola. Let's call it (x,y). The point (x,y) basically represents any point on the parabola. Anyways we want the distance between the point (x,y) and the focus (6,2) to be equal to the distance between the point (x,y) and the point (x,1). Note: The point (x,1) is the point that is on the same vertical line as (x,y) and is on the directrix.
So you need to use the distance formula to calculate the following two things: 1) distance from (x,y) to (6,2) 2) distance from (x,y) to (x,1) 3) Set 1 equal to 2. 4) Square both sides to get rid of the square root part.
