PLEASE HELP FAN + MEDALS If a neutral atom has a mass of 12 amu and an atomic number of 5, determine the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in the atom. I know that there are 5 protons, 5 electrons and 7 neutrons. But idk how to get the electrons number. Could someone explain ?
the number of electrons will be equal to the number of protons in a neutral atom.
Atomic number contains protons right? Neutral means net charge is zero. So in this neutral atom we say that it has 5 electrons . So what do u think the no. of electrons are ? Protons are positive and electrons are negative. If 5 positive charges are there to make a neutral atom it should have 5 negative charges right? SO it is gonna be 5 electrons ! So basically in a neutral atom the no. of protons are equal to no. of electrons . :)
