What substance is the conjugate acid in the reaction: HCl + H2O → H3O+ + Cl-? HCl H2O H3O+ Cl-

The base acquiring a proton would be a conjugate acid while the acid releasing the proton would be a conjugate base ! So I would go with H3O+
