OpenStudy (theloshua):

A 20 gram piece of metal is added to a sample of 100 grams of water inside a calorimeter. If the metal is at a temperature of -5° Celsius and the water is at 20° Celsius, which of the following best describes what will occur inside the calorimeter?

OpenStudy (theloshua):

-The final temperature of the water will be 15 degrees Celsius -The energy gained by the metal equals the energy lost by the water -The final temperature of the water will be higher than the initial temperature -The temperature lost by the water will equal the temperature gained by the metal

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Well we can cross off c, the metal is colder then the water so the water will go down in temperature not up

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

We also know that it can't be D, this is because there is different masses involved and there will different heat capacities therefore the temperature lost and gained will not equal each other Do you have an idea of which one it is between a and b?

OpenStudy (theloshua):

I thought it would be a....

OpenStudy (theloshua):

I knew c couldnt be right...

OpenStudy (theloshua):

you there?

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

The thing with that answer though is that we don't know the metal and therefore we don't have the heat capacity for it

OpenStudy (theloshua):

im also realizing d isnt an option either XD

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Sorry it froze for a minute there

OpenStudy (theloshua):

why does it matter? It's not asking a calorimetry equation...

OpenStudy (theloshua):

n its okay

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

The answer is b because qgained=qlost Where q represents the energy

OpenStudy (theloshua):

wait.....

OpenStudy (theloshua):

oh, cauz it adjusts and equals out to the same temperature?

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Yes they will have the same end temperature but it's not nessicarily the half way point between them

OpenStudy (theloshua):

*sighs* Im confused...

OpenStudy (theloshua):

......?

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

The energy lost by the water is the same as the energy gained by the metal. Both the water and metal will end at the same temperature. It could be any number between 20 and -5 depending on the conditions of the reaction and unless you know all conditions you can't specifically say a temperature and chances are it's not going to be the half way point between the two temperature so it won't be 7.5 Celcius

OpenStudy (theloshua):

ohhhhh, and theres no way of calculating that without knowing what the metal is?

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Exactly!!!!

OpenStudy (theloshua):

okayyyyyy thats so simple haha, i feel stupid now. Your amazing!!! :*

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

It's no problem at all and don't feel stupid I thought NaOH was apparently a salt when I know it's a base because I was thinking NaCl, so you're not stupid at all

OpenStudy (theloshua):

haha, thats a more intelligent slip up then mine :D

OpenStudy (theloshua):

may I ask where your experience is from? Like how do you know this stuff?

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

I'm going into my third year as a chemistry major

OpenStudy (theloshua):

ohhhh, okay, thats cool, idk how you do chemistry constantly... :p you find it fun?

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

I absolutely love chemistry it's the one thing that clicked with me in high school, this first semester back I have 30 hours of chem a week so I get to do a bunch of really fun labs that a lot of people would rather bang their head against the wall instead of do but I find them fun

OpenStudy (theloshua):

haha, thats really cool :D

OpenStudy (theloshua):

well I fanned you so I will definetely contact you in the future if I'm having problems ;) Im new to open study, but I like it alot so far

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

It's pretty good here I've been on for about 50 days now and I've been on every day helping some one I find it enjoyable!

OpenStudy (theloshua):

youve been here 50 days and have almost 200 fans? O.o

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

There's people that have been on for less time and have more

OpenStudy (theloshua):

okay, i guess haha your pretty btw ;D I tend to not let guys help me, It makes me uncomfortable, idk why *shrug*

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Everyone has their own preferences

OpenStudy (theloshua):

yepp...

OpenStudy (theloshua):

anywayyy... Ill leave you alone now and let you do our thing :D hanks again!!

OpenStudy (theloshua):

your*

OpenStudy (theloshua):

thanks*

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

Haha no problem anytime!
