Medal, fan, PLUS testimonial for answer! Calculate the following and round the answer to the correct number of significant figures: a. 3.0 cm x 12.659 cm = b. (7.00 x 102) m x (3.010 x 10-4) m = c. 8.003 g x 3.54 g + 132.9 g =
A. Do i just multiply them then find the sigfig? (I know how to do sig figs (significant figures)) B. The problem is actually 7.00 x 10^2) m x (3.010 x 10^-4) m = I don't know what happened there. :/ C. Multiply and Add, then find the sig fig?
I think the top is 37.977....so is that 5 sig figs?
Or 3?
So A would be 37.977 but 3.0 has 2 sig figs so you would round it to 2 sig figs so 38
Oh yea, because the amount of sig figs is equal to the amount of sig figs of the least precise number. Okay, so the answer is 2, which is 38. Now for B. :)
So for B you would just multiply them and round to 3 sig figs because of the 7.00 because that is the lowest amount
So it would be 700 x 0.0003010 = ? right? (undo the scientific notation) then we need to multiply to get 0.2107.
or .210. So 3, which are .210? or do I round the 0 because of the 7?
so in this case you need 3 sig figs which are the first three numbers as middle zeros count you would round the seven so it should be 0.211 but you should also put it back into scientific notation
2.11 x 10 ^ -1?
Maybe not I'm not sure if you would have to put it back in scientific notation in my opinion since it started in scientific notation it should end in it as well but that might not be the case you're probably fine to leave it
Thats fine. :) Now for c.
multiply then add?
PEMDAS
For c carry out all calculations then do sig figs so you would apply BEDMAS or PEDMAS and do multiplication then addition
So the answer is 3, which are 161.
Yes 161 but you don't need the decimal you only need it if the last number was a zero to say that it is significant
