What is the electron configuration of the element with 27 protons?

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Can you identify the element with 27 protons by name?

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

I'll start you off 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 the next 2 suborbitals are 4s and 3d

OpenStudy (cwrw238):

its a member of the transitional group of elements

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Cobalt @JoannaBlackwelder

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Great! :-) From here we know that cobalt has 27 electrons (to balance out the 27 protons).

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

And we need to add them in the order found here: http://chemwiki.ucdavis.edu/Inorganic_Chemistry/Electronic_Configurations

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Each orbital hold 2 electrons. s subshells have 1 orbital, p subshells have 3 orbitals, and d subshells have 5 orbitals.

OpenStudy (joannablackwelder):

Do you see how @cwrw238 came up with the electron configuration up to argon?

OpenStudy (arindameducationusc):

I guess she knows. But she doesn't know the sequence. Its 1s,2s,2p,3s,3p,4s,3d,4p,...... This way now @JoannaBlackwelder is right about the orbitals. so s can contain 2 electrons, p, 6 electrons, d, 10 electrons and f 14 electrons.

OpenStudy (welshfella):

cwrw238 knows all right She's a chemistry major.

OpenStudy (arindameducationusc):

wow @welshfella !

OpenStudy (welshfella):

yea she's my niece . She's also just finished a degree course in Math.

OpenStudy (arindameducationusc):

Thanks to this website that I am having a conversation with you guys.! Awesome!
