"Which of the following list contains an acid, a base and a neutral substance? (a) LiOH , H2O , CACO3 (b) Ca(OH)2 , NaCl , KNO3 (c) CO2 , NH3 , Na2CO3 (d) MgCl2 , MgO, NO2 " How would you determine this?

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

do u know the difference between the acid base and neutral substance

OpenStudy (anonymous):

An acid has a low pH and gives away a proton in a reaction. A base receives the proton in a reaction and has a high pH. A neutral substance has a pH of 7 and thats about it..

OpenStudy (chmvijay):

yaa now think which one gives protons and which one gives -OH groups out of those chemicals

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(a) LiOH gives the -OH, and the H20 gives the protons (b) Ca(OH)2 gives the -OH but which gives the protons? (c) NH3 can give the protons - can't it?? (d) doesn't give any...

OpenStudy (welshfella):

MgO in option d is a base not sure if NO2 " is an acid or not
