Absolute Value Equations 5n-3=|n+9| I got 3 and -1 I keep plugging in -1 but it gives me positive 8 and not negative. Help?
If you are trying to find the point of intersection (i.e which point do both of these equations meet) then n=3 is your only solution because the absolute function will not intersect at a negative axis..
using n=3 you can obtain your coordinate of the point of intersection
I'm supposed to solve each equation. Whatever the n is should match up if you plug them in.
right i got it, so then at n=3 it intersects (3,12) also at n=-1 it intersects (-1,8)
do the answers given to you show a negative 8 ? is that the question
5(3)-3 is 12. 3+9 is 12. Good. 5(-1)-3 is -8. |-1+9| is 8.
@marigirl is correct. n = 3 is the only solution because n = -1 is an extraneous (fake) solution.
but that function we did - (5n-3) so then that becomes -5n+3
yes but the -1 is supposed to be substituted into the original equation to check the result. When you do that you get 8 on one side an -8 on the other, so -1 doesn't work for this equation
