The no. of protons that an atom has is like the 'fingerprint' for identifying what that atom is in the periodic table (the set of all known atom types). Many atoms can lose or gain electrons to form ions of that atom, but if we were to change the number of protons any given atom has (i.e. in radioactive decay) we would be 'converting' into something fundamentally different (i.e. to a different type of atom). So, given our sample contains 'identical' atoms with the same number of positively charged protons and negatively charged electrons (i.e. no charge/neutral), they must all belong to the same ________ , represented by the same symbol on the periodic table. What's the name we give to these individual symbols @joshuasmom ......have you any idea what the answer might be?
