Using your knowledge of colligative properties explain whether sodium chloride or calcium chloride would be a more effective substance to melt the ice on a slick sidewalk. Use 3 – 4 sentences in your explanation

OpenStudy (photon336):

Sodium chloride NaCl Calcium chloride CaCl2 What do you know about colligative properties?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

nothing really

OpenStudy (photon336):

Okay read this and let me know if you get it as I describe the concepts. Colliagitve properties (just means the number of molecules) like how much stuff you're putting into a solution: |dw:1440990542329:dw| Got this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (photon336):

Ok, now another concept: When we dissolve a solute in say a solvent two things happens: it lowers the freezing point, and elevates the boiling point. Generally speaking when we add something to a solution it increases the boiling point and lowers the freezing point, does this make sense and can you tell me why? |dw:1440990898267:dw|
