An empty container with an unknown volume is weighed and found to have a mass of 94.7g. The container is then filled with a liquid with a density of 1.015 g/cm^3 and reweighed. The mass of the container and the liquid is 154.4g. Determine the volume of the container to the appropriate number of significant figures.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[Density=\frac{ mass }{ volume }\] What is the density of the liquid? What about its mass?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the density is 1.015g/cm^3 the mass is 59.7g

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nice job! Now plug in those values.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60.5955

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[Volume=\frac{ mass }{ density }\] Units should be in cm^3 because g/(g/cm^3) is cm^3 Dividing significant figure means the answer should have the least significant figures of the 3 original numbers. 94.7 has only 3 and the other two has 4, so the answer should have 3 significant figures.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So 60.60 cm^3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Would that be right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I got it. Thanks for the help!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Nope 60.6cm^3 60.60 has 4 significant figure. The 6,0,6,0 makes it 4 We use 3 to be the significant figure because when dividing, you choose the one with the least significant figure in the problem. 94.7g would be the least.
