Can someone explain these two laws to me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The law of definite composition and the law of multiple Proportions. I don't understand the definitions it gave.... if you would give an example for each that would be appreciated!!

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

The Law of Definite Composition states: A compound always contains a fixed ratio of two or more elements combined in a definite proportion by mass. This law is the basis for the definition of a chemical compound. For example the chemical definition of water is H₂O. There are always 2 atoms of hydrogen to one of oxygen in our definition of water.

OpenStudy (taramgrant0543664):

The law of multiple proportions states that when elements combine they do so in a ratio of small whole numbers. For example, carbon and oxygen react to form CO or CO2, but not CO1.3 for instance. Furthermore, it states that if two elements form more than one compound between them then the ratios of the masses of the second element combined with a fixed mass of the first element will also be in ratios of small whole numbers.
