An unknown solution has an H+ concentration of 10-12 moles per liter. Which of the following statements correctly describes this solution?
The solution is basic in nature. The solution is acidic in nature. The solution is neutral in nature.
Hello @link65 ! Have you any idea about pH and pOH ?
no
Ok, So basic Idea of pH is that anything having a pH < 7 is acidic and > 7 is basic. Cool yet?
some what
pH is a basically a logarithmic scale which measures the concentration of H+ ions. It goes from 0 to 14 anything having a pH value of smaller then 7 will be acidic and greater than 7 will be basic. Substances having a pH equal to 7 will be neutral.

Cool Cool? Forget the question for a second and just tell me is it clear what I am trying to teach you?
Great !!! Before we can touch our question you need to know one more thing. You know that to declare something acidic or basic you need to know its position on pH scale but how will you determine its position????? :O We use the following formula \(\sf pH = -log(H^+ ion~concentration)\) Cool cool?
k
That's it now we can proceed to our question !! In the question, concentration of \(\sf H^+\) is given \(\sf 10^{-12}\) moles/L. We substitute this value in the above formula and calculate the pH \(\sf pH=-log(10^{-12}) = ?\)
Can you do it?
Once you calculate the pH, you can determine whether the solution is acidic or basic.
