OpenStudy (mew55):

how can i calculate screening constants of outermost electron? ex: Cl

OpenStudy (aaronq):

"For electrons in an s or p orbital with n > 1, the screening constant is given by \(s = 1.00 N_2 + 0.85 N_1 + 0.35 N_0\) \(N_0\) represents the number of other electrons in the same shell, \(N_1\) represents the number of electrons in the next smaller shell ( n - 1 ), and \(N_2\) is the number of electrons in other smaller shells (n - 2 and smaller )." http://www.chm.davidson.edu/vce/atomicorbitals/ZeffSize.html

OpenStudy (mew55):

thank u for the information but i still don't understand how once i get the electron configuration of Cl then i apply it to the equation. i just want to know how to put it in the equation :(

OpenStudy (rushwr):

Here I have a link for you. Just go and see. http://www.wikihow.com/Determine-Screening-Constant-and-Effective-Nuclear-Charge

OpenStudy (aaronq):

So you have Cl, which has the configuration \(1s^22s^22p^63s^23p^5\). Electrons on the same shell (\(N_0\)), \(3s^3p^4\) Electrons in the shell below (\(N_1\)), \(2s^22p^6\) Electrons in two shells below (\(N_2\)), \(1s^2\) \(s = 1.00 N_2 + 0.85 N_1 + 0.35 N_0=1.00*2+0.85*8+0.35*6\)

OpenStudy (aaronq):

electrons in the same shell were supposed to be \(3s^2\) not \(3s^3\) lol
